Description

In recent years, the burgeoning field of memory studies has complicated understandings of how people relate to the past. This is nowhere more true than in East Asia, where subjective understandings of history and collective connections to the past continue to shape contemporary politics, social relations and culture. This module brings together these two dynamic areas of contemporary scholarship to carefully consider what the theoretical challenges of memory studies can bring to the study of East Asia and how the particular historical, political, cultural and social manifestations of memory in East Asia may challenge accepted understandings of 'memory' in Euro-American discourse.
